Auto Maintenance for Better MPGs

Auto Maintenance for Better MPGsTaking care of your car allows it to take care of you, or at least take you places. By keeping up with routine auto maintenance and following a few simple steps you can keep more money in your pocket by keeping your vehicle's MPGs at their max. The following are a few simple tips to ensure that your vehicle stays on the road longer, and you spend less time, and money, at the gas pump.

Check your Gas Cap

A damaged gas cap can allow gasoline to evaporate out of any cracks. This means you're paying for gas you never had a chance to burn. That's worse than zero miles per gallon! Make sure your gas cap fits tightly every time you fill up!

Avoid Long Warm Up Time

A vehicle should never need more than a few minutes, if that, to warm up. If you car takes several minutes before it seems to be ready for the road than you likely are having some other issue and you should see a local mechanic. An idling car is using gas, but you're not going anywhere!

Replace Spark Plugs

Spark plugs burn gasoline to create a small spark to fire off the pistons and make your engine turn. Depending on how many cylinders you have spark plugs can fire as many as 3 million times each every 1,000 miles traveled. A dirty spark plug can cause misfires, which is a waste of gasoline.

Replace the Air Filter

A dirty air filter will cause your engine to run rich due to the blocked air flow. A rich filter means you car is using to much gas in the engine. This is a waste of gasoline that can possibly cause other major issues in your vehicle's engine.

Properly Inflate Tires

Underinflated tires can cause increased fuel consumption by up to two MPGs or more because the engine must work harder to get the soft tires to spin. If you continually lose air out of a tire, you may have a nail stuck in it or other damage allowing the air to escape. Have your local tire store check your tire's PSI rating and inflate your tires to the proper levels.
