Common Signs of Trouble with Manual Transmissions
While the manual transmission may soon be a thing of the past it is still available on many new cars and plenty of used ones. Understanding the signs of manual transmission trouble is important if you want your stick shift to last you for hundreds of thousands of miles. While not everyone prefers that third pedal, if you're reading this article it's probably because you take pleasure in driving with your left foot. Be on the lookout for these issues and if you experience any of them head to you local transmission repair shop.
Does the clutch pedal feel strange when using it? It is resting closer to the floor or is there excessive engine revving as you shift? This could be an indication you need a clutch repair or adjustment.
Do you remember that burning smell that would occur when you were first learning to drive a stick shift? If you catch that whiff now it likely means your clutch is due for replacement.
Grinding When Shifting
Grinding noises can occur if you try and shift without properly depressing the clutch, but any strange noises that occur with the pedal pushed all the way in are a sign of trouble. Head to a shop for further diagnostics.
Popping Out of Gear
One of the more dangerous indicators of transmission trouble is if your car simply falls or pops out of gear. This can indicate a worn clutch but may also be a sign of oil leaking onto the clutch plate resulting in excessive lubrication.
Not Going into Gear
If there is a hydraulic pressure issue occurring with your transmission it can be very difficult to even get into gear. This usually happens if there is a leak between the master and slave cylinders.
While transmission fluid leaks are more common with automatic transmissions you should still be concerned if you find something leaking from your car. Transmission fluid is generally red in color, so if you find something of this nature leaking from your car it's time to head to the repair shop.
