Is it time for Cooling System Repair?
Your car is made up of many systems that work together to get you safely and reliably to whichever destination is in your future. One of those systems is the cooling system. It is tasked with keeping the engine operating temperature regulated to prevent overheating. Overheating could lead to massive engine trouble, including the possibility of a need for an engine rebuild or replacement. If you notice any of these signs of cooling system or radiator problems do not hesitate to make an appointment with your local auto repair shop.
Temperature Gauge Reading
One of the first things you may notice if there is trouble with the cooling system is a dashboard temperature gauge that skyrockets to the red zone. This is a clear indication that there is trouble under the hood!
White Steam Coming from Hood
If you miss the rising temp gauge the next thing that will likely happen is sure to not be missed. White steam will pour out from under the hood as the coolant and water mix used to keep the engine cool gets too hot and evaporates. This means you are currently overheating! Pull over as soon as it is safe and legal to do so and then call your auto mechanic to make an appointment for service.
Low Levels of Coolant
From time to time it is smart to check your coolant levels, but be sure to do so when the engine is cold! If you find that the coolant is low it definitely indicates a problem, such as a leak. If you experience the next two issues you'll have a better idea of what is happening.
White Exhaust Smoke
Should white exhaust smoke be coming out of the tailpipe it often means that the engine is burning up coolant. This could indicate a very serious problem, such as a blown head gasket or a cracked block. Get to the repair shop to find out just what is happening under the hood.
Visible Coolant Leak
The most obvious sign of cooling system trouble is a coolant leak that you can watch drip. Coolant is usually a bright green color, so if you find this under your car be sure to get to the auto shop ASAP to prevent further trouble.
