4 Symptoms of Failing Suspension
When people think of the suspension system they generally view it as a comfort feature, one that keeps a vehicle stable over uneven terrain, ensuring a smooth ride. While this is indeed true the suspension also completes a few more important functions. While riding the shock and struts ensure all four wheels remain on the ground all times, thus preventing rollovers and making sure that your car has access to complete braking abilities at all times. To keep your car safe to drive, as well as comfortable to ride in, be sure to contact your local auto repair shop if you notice any of these signs it is time for suspension repair.
One corner low
If you notice that one corner of your car is lower than the others, but the tire is not flat, it is safe to assume the shock or strut in that corner of the car has failed and collapsed on itself. This issue will cause your car to drift, a major control problem which in turn can accelerate tire wear or cause uneven tire wear.
Oil on the strut
Should it seem as if your vehicle's ride is a bit more bouncy or rough try to run a rag over the hydraulic struts. If there is oil on the struts there is a good chance that the casing is cracked and the hydraulic oil that is used to absorb the dips and bumps of the roadway has cracked or a seal has broken, rendering the strut ineffective.
One of the more frightening signs of suspension trouble is when you feel as if your car may roll over or otherwise go out of control when you pass through a corner, particularly at higher speeds. This generally means that the anti-sway bar has failed. This part of the suspension shifts the vehicle's center of gravity as you turn to prevent the car from rolling.
There is a quick test you can conduct to check your suspension's functionality. Simply push on the hood or trunk of the vehicle to get it to start bouncing up and down. Once you stop pushing the car should return to a stable position within three to four bounces. Any more than that and a trip to the auto shop is in order.
The suspension plays a crucial role in the safety and the comfort of your commute, so pay attention to signs of trouble it may be giving you.
