If this happens head to the shop for brake repair
When it comes to car care people are quick to put off routine maintenance and ignore some signs of trouble, hoping, for some reason, that it will all just go away and everything will be OK. Unfortunately, contrary to popular belief, car's don't fix themselves. This is especially true of the brakes, your vehicle's most important safety feature. If you notice any of the following problems be sure to visit your local auto repair shop for superior brake repair before you end up with a crunched bumper, or worse.
One of the most common signs of impending brake failure is a grinding or squealing noise that occurs as you try and slow down. This generally means that your brake pads are worn low and need to be replaced. The noise you're hearing is metal grinding on metal.
Soft brake pedal
The brake pedal should have some resistance to it. If it is easily pushed to the floor or rests closer to the floor than it used to head to the auto shop. This can indicate a few different troubles that range from minor to major, such as a brake fluid leak.
When you hit the brakes your car should continue moving in the direction you're intending on going, so if it jerks left or right, you know there is a problem. This may mean uneven wear of the brake pads, a malfunctioning wheel cylinder or there is contaminants in the brake fluid.
Vibrating brake pedal
If you can feel vibrations coming from the brake pedal or steering wheel when you try to slow down then there is a good chance that your vehicle's brake rotors are warped. Rotors are what the brake pads grab in order to generate the friction that slows the car. If they are warped it means the surface area for the pads to grab is uneven, which can greatly increase the distance it takes to stop your car.
If the ABS (anti-lock braking system) light illuminates on your dashboard be sure to visit your local auto repair shop. There are numerous issues that can cause this light to come on so it is important that you head to the repair center as soon as possible, as the problem could inhibit the safety of your ride.
