5 Symptoms of a Failing Transmission
Transmissions are very intricate machines that allow for the transfer or power from the engine to the wheels of your vehicle. They are generally very study and as long as regular maintenance schedules are followed no major damage should occur. Most transmission problems are caused by low or leaking transmission fluid, electronic component failure and of course neglecting service. A transmission that is suffering from some sort of problem will likely display one of these five signs of transmission trouble.
Grinding Gear Noise
One of the more common signs of trouble is a grinding noise that occurs during shifting. This noise may also be accompanied by vibrations in the gear shifter or the clutch pedal on manual transmission vehicles.
If your automatic transmission does not rapidly shift gears there is a good chance the transmission is low on automatic transmission fluid. The delayed response will be highlighted by spiking RPMs while the vehicle is trying to shift.
Popping Out of Gear
Another problem that can be caused by low transmission fluid is the vehicle popping out of gear. Automatic transmissions may shift between gears unannounced or when it is unnecessary if low on fluid. This problem can also occur on manual transmissions, however it will slip into neutral during driving, which can be very dangerous as you will lose the ability to control the speed of your car until it is put back into gear.
Burning Clutch Smell
If you regularly drive a stick shift vehicle there should never be the smell of a burning clutch, which is often associated with learning to drive a manual transmission car. If this smell arises it may be time for a clutch repair or adjustment.
Transmission Fluid Leak
If you find a puddle of red fluid under your vehicle you've likely just discovered an automatic transmission fluid leak. A leaking transmission can lead to major damage so be sure to call your transmission repair mechanic right away!
Minor transmission problems and regular transmission service are generally inexpensive. But if they are neglected they can lead to a need for a transmission rebuild, which will be quite a bit more expensive. Always contact your mechanic at the first sign of transmission trouble.
