6 reasons the check engine light might be on
Did you know that there are many, many reasons the check engine light could come on? Depending on your vehicle's sensory system, there could be 100 or more reasons that little and often confusing light comes on. For many people the light is a message that is dooming their car or truck to the crusher, but in reality it likely just means that a sensor needs to simply be cleaned or replaced. Since many problems are so small it is very important to get to a shop as soon as this light turns on to get the problem resolved before it turns into a bigger issue, as demonstrated by this first check engine light problem.
Failed Catalytic Converter
If it is found that the catalytic converter has failed during a check engine light diagnostics test you're in for an expensive repair. This is one of the most highly priced parts on any car, but it won't fail unless something much small malfunctions first, which would have trigger the light long ago. So while you could have been paying to have a sensor replaced you're now looking at an extensive and expensive repair because you waited to have diagnostics completed.
Faulty MAF Sensor
The mass airflow sensor measures incoming air and determines how much of it needs to be mixed with gasoline in order to create a proper running engine. If the sensor malfunctions it could result in a vehicle running rich, triggering the check engine light.
Malfunctioning O2 Sensor
The oxygen sensor is located in the exhaust system and takes note of how much oxygen is in the exhaust fumes. This too helps dictate the air and fuel mixture and if it can do its job correctly your vehicle will likely run very rough.
Misfiring Spark Plugs
The spark plugs are fed an electrical charge that ignites the air and fuel mixture. If they fire erratically or not on time the check engine light will come on.
There are a few transmission issues that can trigger the light, one of the most common reasons being low levels of transmission fluid.
Loose Gas Cap
The best you can hope for if your check engine light comes on is a loose gas cap. Make sure to always tighten the cap after filling up so fuel vapors can't evaporate out of the filler tube, thus triggering the light.
