Car Problems Diagnosed by Sound
When it comes to car trouble there are many different ways a vehicle may communicate that an issue is present. Common symptoms of a problem include fluid leaks, weird smells, performance decreases and dashboard warning lights. Another sign of trouble that should never be overlooked is weird sounds. Many different car issues will result in odd noises being created, so if you hear something that sounds off, it probably is. Here are a few common car problems that can often be diagnosed by the sound they make.
Low Transmission Fluid
If your vehicle's transmission is burning or leaking fluid it is probable you'll begin to experience issues shifting gears. More often than not a grinding noise will occur when the vehicle shifts due to the lack of lubrication. Routine transmission maintenance can often resolve this issue.
Worn Brake Pads
The brakes are your car's most important safety system so it's important to give them your full attention. If you encounter grinding noises when you hit the brake pedal it is likely because the brake pads have worn thin and need to be replaced.
Bad Engine Bearings
The moving parts of the engine rely on engine bearing to ensure that they can move freely. If these bearings wear out to due to poor lubrication or years of use they will start to make a knocking noise that rises and falls with the engine's RPMs. If the bearings are not addressed it could result in the engine seizing.
Aside from routing hazardous exhaust fumes out of the tailpipe the system is also tasked with dampening engine noise. If your car's motor starts to sound it is rumbling very loud it is probable that an exhaust leak has occurred. A major decrease in MPGs may accompany this issue.
The starter motor is what gets the engine spinning when you first turn the key. If you try and start your key and only hear a clicking noise, either once or repetitive, it means the starter motor has failed.
