4 Common Signs it's Time for Engine Repair
There are few greater feelings than being able to hit the open road and cruise as far as you want. Of course, you're more likely utilizing your car for a daily commute to the office. Either way, your car is put under a lot of stress during its regular operations. Without proper care or after many miles on the road there is a good chance you're going to run into some problems with your motor. There are a few signs of engine trouble you can look out for, and as long as you head to the mechanic at the first trace of an issue you shouldn't have to worry about extensive engine repairs. The following are common symptoms of engine problems that you need to know.
The moving parts of your vehicle's engine rests on engine bearings. If these bearings wear out because they are not properly lubricated or just due to high mileage there will be metal on metal contact that creates a repetitive knocking noise that will speed up and down parallel to engine RPMs. Head to the mechanic the first time you hear this noise to avoid the need for a complete engine rebuild or replacement.
Check Engine Light
While the check engine light can be triggered by many different issues, many of them are directly related to engine performance. To have the reason the light came on properly diagnosed head to a modern auto repair shop that uses factory computer aided diagnostics to get to the bottom of the trouble.
Large amounts of smoke coming out of the tailpipe means that there is some type of engine trouble. Based on the color of the smoke you can often identify what the issue may be. Black smoke means that excess amounts of gasoline is burning, blue smoke indicates the burning of motor oil and puffy white smoke is likely related to a coolant leaking into the engine and being burnt with the fuel.
Loss of Power
If your car suddenly begins to give you trouble accelerating or has difficulty going uphill there is likely a fuel delivery related issue with the engine. A loss in power is a telltale sign of engine problems and the best thing you can do to avoid worsening conditions is have a mechanic identify the root cause.
The engine is the heart of your car and deserves your full attention. Without proper maintenance you'll end up paying hundreds of dollars or more in repair costs, so be sure to conduct regular oil changes and other services.
