Does my Car Need Radiator Repair?
The cooling system consists of numerous parts including the water pump, radiator, thermostat, cooling fan, and a series of hoses, all of which work together in order to regulate the operating temperature of the engine. If the cooling system were to fail it would result in your car's engine overheating. This in turn could lead to numerous problems that would require extensive repair. If you run into any of these five symptoms of cooling system trouble be sure to reach out to your mechanic as soon as possible.
Rising temperature gauge
Perhaps the first thing you will see if the cooling system begins to malfunction is the temperature gauge on the dashboard rising into the hot zone. This is a clear indication that you need to pull over and give your car a rest, as the engine is operating at hazardous temps.
Steam coming from under the hood
If you miss the rising temperature gauge the next thing you will likely encounter if the car is beginning to overheat is steam pouring out from under the hood. Pull over as soon as it is safe and legal to do so and contact your local mechanic, because it's time for cooling system service.
Low coolant levels
On occasion you should check your car's coolant reservoir to ensure that it is at a sufficient level. Be sure to do this when the engine is cool. If you find that the coolant levels are low it is likely caused by a leak, either externally or internally. If it is inside the engine you will probably notice the next issue as well.
White exhaust smoke
If coolant makes its way into the combustion chamber it will result in white exhaust smoke. If you ever notice increased amounts of exhaust or colored smoke be sure to head to the mechanic for proper diagnostics.
Visible coolant leak
The most obvious sign of trouble is a visible coolant leak. Coolant is generally a bright green color and smells very sweet. If you find this in your driveway it's time to make an appointment for auto repair, but be sure to clean up the spill, as this fluid is very attractive to animals, including pets, but it is extremely toxic as well.
