Top Signs of Engine Trouble

Top Signs of Engine TroubleIt is easy to understand why the engine of a vehicle is often compared to the heart of a living being. Like the heart pumps blood, the engine is pumping its pistons up and down, creating the power necessary to move the vehicle. If you felt you were having any heart trouble you'd visit a doctor, wouldn't you? So why not head to the mechanic if you believe your car is having engine trouble? If you notice any of the following symptoms of engine trouble be sure to visit your local auto repair shop as soon as possible.

Knocking Noises

A knocking noise that rises and falls in sync with RPMs can be attributed to worn engine bearings. These bearings support the motion of moving motor parts, and should they fail, which they most often due because of a lack of lubrication, the engine can suddenly seize. This of course can result in the need for an engine replacement or rebuild.

Increased Exhaust Smoke

Have you noticed excessive amounts of exhaust coming out of your car's tailpipe? Judging by the color of the smoke you can often determine the type of issue your vehicle is having. White smoke may indicate coolant is burning up in the combustion chamber, blue smoke is a sign of burning oil and black smoke means too much gas is being used.

Decreased Performance

A drastic drop in performance and MPGs can be a sign of engine trouble both major and minor. Many times rough idles, stalling and a drop in fuel economy can be attributed to relatively simple problems, such as worn spark plugs, failing ignition coils or clogged filters, but proper diagnostics will need to be ran to identify the true cause of trouble.

Leaks

Nothing should ever leak from your car. If you notice a drip from the vehicle be sure to visit a mechanic right away. The leaks most commonly associated with engine issues are oil leaks and coolant/antifreeze leaks. Oil is necessary for engine lubrication and sufficient coolant is needed to prevent overheating.

Check Engine Light

One sign of motor trouble that will stare you right in the face is the check engine light illuminating. Many of the issues that trigger the light are relatively small, such as a failed sensor or even a broken gas cap. However, if left unattended, the problem will get much worse.
