Top Causes of No Start Issues

Top Causes of No Start IssuesWhen it comes to car trouble there are few things as frustrating as a vehicle that just won't start. While a flat tire or breakdown is also troublesome, no start issues will make your stomach drop at the turn of a key. What is fortunate about these types of problems, is that most of them can be fixed relatively quickly and affordably. The following are five of the most common no start problems.

Dead Battery

The top cause of no start issues is a dead battery. A dead battery caused by leaving the lights on or a door ajar can usually be remedied by jump starting the vehicle, which will recharge the battery. However, batteries do die and need to be replaced from time to time.

Failed Alternator

If the battery continues to die over and over and you experience other electrical issues, such as dim headlights, trouble with the radio or malfunctioning power accessories, you can place your bet on a failed alternator. The alternator generates power as the vehicle runs, and if it fails the battery will be depleted of its energy.

Malfunctioning Starter

The starter motor is fed an electrical charge when the key is turned in the ignition, which causes it to actuate its pinion gear to engage with the flywheel in order to spin the motor. If the starter fails you will often hear a loud clicking noise, or a series of clicks.

Ignition Issue

The ignition itself can often be a cause for no start issues. The biggest problem is being unable to turn the key in the ignition. If this happens to you be sure to jiggle the steering wheel to ensure that it is not locked. If you still can't get the key to turn you'll likely need to replace the mechanism.

Fuel System Defect

If the motor turns over and over without firing up there is a good chance that no fuel is being delivered to the combustion chamber. Common fuel delivery issues include a failed fuel pump, a clogged fuel filter or malfunctioning fuel injection unit.
