What are the main parts of the cooling system?

What are the main parts of the cooling system?Your vehicle's engine is designed to run at a fairly high temperature, but unchecked it could overheat, resulting in massive damage. Luckily your vehicle utilizes a cooling system to prevent that from happening. This system is made up of a number of different parts that work together to prevent the operating temperature from reaching temperatures that could cause trouble under the hood. The following are the main parts of an automotive cooling system.

Coolant

The coolant is the specialized fluid that runs through the motor in order to absorb heat.

Radiator

The radiator cools off the coolant mixture by allowing air to pass through the tube fin area. Thus the coolant can be recirculated at a lower temperature.

Water Pump

The water pump is what forces the cooled antifreeze/coolant from the radiator and pushes it through the engine block, cylinder head and heater core before it returns to the radiator.

Heater Core

The heater core is what provides heat to the cabin of the car. It draws the heat from the cooling antifreeze and blows it into the vehicle when the heater is on.

Thermostat

The thermostat is what controls the minimum operating temperature of the engine. Because engines operate more efficiently when they are warmed up it doesn't open until operating temperature reaches a certain degree.

Hoses

There are a number of hoses in the cooling system, including the radiator hose, heater hose and by-pass hose, all of which direct coolant through the system.

Fan Clutch

Detects the air temperature and either slips or binds up in order to draw the correct amount of air into the radiator.

Electric Cooling Fan

Some vehicles use an electric cooling fan that is turned on by sensors when the engine begins to get too hot.
