What is Routine Transmission Service
All vehicles require regular maintenance to ensure that all of their systems are properly operating. This includes things like changing the oil, providing your cooling system with fresh fluids and hoses, timing belt replacement and more. The transmission needs its own special service in order to work well, also. The service includes several steps that will ensure your transmission is healthy and operational. Here are the basics of what a transmission service includes.
Transmission fluid flush
The main reason to have a transmission service completed is to complete an automatic transmission fluid flush. New fluid restores the holding power between clutches, reduces slip and helps to regulate temperature inside the transmission as new fluid can reduce heat production. Like an oil change, when you remove the old fluid from the transmission it takes away many tiny particles of metal shavings and other contaminants that have made their way inside, which clog the passages between the moving parts. If you do not remove these particles they will wear down on the transmission, eventually resulting in the need for extensive transmission repair.
Transmission filter replacement or cleaning
When the transmission flush is completed the filter that is supposed to remove the above mentioned contaminants will also be changed or cleaned, depending on what type of filter is in your vehicle. If this filter is not cleaned it will reduce the ability of the fluid to properly flow through the transmission. If transmission fluid can not properly flow it will result in poor shifting, which can be diagnosed by grinding noises, slipping gears and delayed shifting. Each of these problems could lead to a need for repair.
Cleaning the transmission pan
Another important reason to have the transmission serviced is so that the transmission pan can be cleaned. All the contaminants that have been mentioned will eventually settle in the pan. Simply draining and refilling the fluid won't completely remove these particles. When you clean the pan you can get what is left out of the system to ensure the transmission is completely clean and free of harm.
Be sure to check your owners manual to see how often your transmission needs to be serviced. Of course things may change as your vehicle ages and gets many more miles on it.
