Does My Car Need Brake Repair?

What is the most important system of your vehicle? Without a doubt it is the brakes. The brakes are what keep you from careening out of control, allow you to bring your car to a controlled stop and enjoy an overall safer ride. If you ever suspect that your having trouble braking you will want to get to the repair shop as soon as possible for service. The following are five of the most common signs of brake trouble.

Grinding noises when braking

One of the most common signs of brake trouble is the occurrence of strange noises when trying to slow the vehicle. Most often this sounds are described as a grinding or screeching noise. These noises occur most often because the brake pads are highly worn and metal is grinding on metal when the brakes are applied.

ABS light turns on

If the ABS light on your dashboard ever turns on be sure to get to the repair shop as soon as possible. ABS stands for Anti-lock Braking System and if the light comes on it means that a sensor in the braking system has detected some sort of issue. Proper diagnostics need to be ran by a professional auto technician.

Car pulls when braking

Your vehicle should always continue in a straight line when the brakes are applied. If it is found that the car tries to go left or right when trying to slow it there is good reason to believe that there is uneven wear occurring of the brake pads. However this could also be caused by contaminants in the brake fluid or even a malfunctioning wheel cylinder.

Brake pedal vibrates

A vibrating brake pedal often indicates warped rotors. Rotors are what brake pads grab to slow the vehicle in a disc brake system. If they are warped there will not be sufficient contact between the brake pads and the rotors, resulting in decreased stopping power.

Spongy brake pedal

If the brake pedal is easier to push to the floor than it use to or rests closer to the floor now there may be air in the brake lines or even a brake fluid leak. Get to a repair shop right away before the brakes fail completely.
