Why is the Check Engine Light On?

For many drivers the check is light is often seen as a major nuisance. This is quite unfortunate as it is really informing you about what is likely a small problem. Well, a small problem if you get it fixed right away. As soon as the light comes on be sure to visit a local auto repair shop so that proper diagnostics can be ran. There are literally hundreds of things that can trigger this little light, so guessing what may be causing it is quite impossible. The following are some of the most common issues that will cause the light to come on.

Failed MAF sensor

The mass air flow sensor monitors incoming air and calculates how much of it needs to be mixed with the gasoline to create the proper air and fuel mixture. If the sensor malfunctions it can cause a huge decrease in fuel efficiency or cause the motor to run poorly.

Bad O2 Sensor

On the other end of the car is the oxygen sensor, located in the exhaust system. This monitors how much oxygen is in the exhaust to also help create the proper air and fuel mixture. If this sensor malfunctions and is not fixed in a timely manner it could result in a fail catalytic converter, which is one of the most expensive parts to repair on a vehicle.

Malfunctioning Catalytic Converter

The catalytic convert converts hazardous exhaust fumes into less harmful emissions. It will not fail unless something else goes awry, such as a failed oxygen sensor that is not taken care of. This is why it is very crucial to have diagnostics ran as soon as the light comes on!

Cracked or Loose Gas Cap

The best case scenario is that you simply forgot to tighten the gas cap after filling up. This will trigger the light because the EVAP system will detect gasoline vapors as the evaporate up the filler hose.

Bad Spark Plugs

If the spark plugs are not firing properly the check engine light will come on. Spark plugs may become dirty or corroded which can cause the engine to run poorly.

Transmission Issues

It is necessary to note that it isn't just engine problems that can cause the check engine light to come on. Low levels of transmission fluid could also cause this light to turn on.
