Keeping up with Factory Auto Maintenance
You love your car, right? You at least appreciate it for what it is and what it does for you. Well if you want to ensure that your trusty daily driver continues to provide you with reliable transportation it is critical that you don't skip out on factory scheduled maintenance services. Without conducting routine maintenance as called for by your owner's manual your car could fall into despair, resulting in a breakdown and a need for major repair. Here are five of the most common types of scheduled auto maintenance.
Many services that a vehicle needs are bundled into check ups that are conducted every 30,000 miles. During 30/60/90K maintenance a vehicle may undergo safety analysis, computer diagnostics, and a variety of tune up services, such as new spark plugs.
The oil change is the service that your vehicle will require most often. Oil changes are necessary every 3,000 to 5,000 miles for most cars and trucks. This is an important service as fresh oil is necessary to prevent harsh metal on metal contact between the engine's moving parts. The oil change process also helps clean out the engine of sludge and restore MPGs.
Your car uses several specialized fluids to operate various systems. These fluids need to be drained and refilled from time to time to ensure they're free of contaminants. Common fluid flushes include a coolant flush, brake fluid flush, power steering flush, differential flush and transmission flush, but more on the latter in a moment.
If your car uses a timing belt it is critical to have it replaced when called for. If the belt is used past its milage marked date it could snap, causing major havoc under the hood that will require extensive engine repair.
The transmission requires routine maintenance, similar to the engine, but at much less frequent intervals. Be sure to check your owner's manual to see how often your car's transmission requires service. Transmission maintenance includes draining the transmission fluid, cleaning or replacing the transmission fluid filter (if applicable), removing, cleaning and replacing the transmission pan using a new gasket, and refilling the transmission with clean fluid. All this is necessary to ensure your gears continue to shift smoothly.
